Athens with it's main landmark - the Acropolis - is located in the Attica basin, near the Saronic Gulf.
Greece's largest city and ancient centre of civilisation, is a sprawling metropolis and home to innumerable temples, ruins and places of antiquity.
In complete contrast to the stereotypical image of Athens, are the shop lined boulevards and the tranquil haven of the Plaka district. Reminiscent of the cobbled back streets of an Aegean island, the Plaka district sits at the foot of the Acropolis in the shadow of the Parthenon and gives a look into the other quieter side of life in Athens.
Near to Athens are the summer resorts of Vouliagmeni and Glyfada, favourites with the jet-set. Also nearby are the ruins at Sounion and the canal at Corinth.
