Crete, the largest of the Greek islands separates the Aegean from the Libyan Sea and marks the boundary between Europe and Africa.
Crete's strategic location has throughout history, caused it to be one of the most important trading nations in the Mediterranean. From trade comes wealth, as can be witnessed by visiting one of the many magnificent archeological sites for which Crete is famous.
Of particular note is the ancient city of Knossos, built by the Minoans in 1700 BC and destroyed by an eruption of the volcano on Santorini in 1450 BC. Legend has it that this was the home of the infamous half man half beast, the Minotaur. By contrast, Heraklion, the largest town on the island, boasts a multitude of traditional tavernas and lively nightclubs, set alongside a fascinating well-preserved medieval castle and city walls, which overlook the harbour.
