Holidays in Imerovigli

Located a few kilometres north from the capital on the highest, most central part of the magnificent caldera, Imerovigli boasts without a doubt the most spectacular views over the caldera, bay and the nearby landscape. Pretty white and cream coloured houses quietly sit on the cliff-edge giving visual command of the entire area. The position of Imerovigli, which means ‘day’, was ideal for spotting pirate ships approaching Santorini. This quiet, traditional village features a small selection of tavernas, shops and super-luxurious boutique hotels with extensive terraces for guests to admire the view. Visit the Church of the Panagia Malteza with its marvellous carved wooden screen with icons depicting scenes from the Old Testament. For a breathtaking view, take a 20 minute walk along a pathway to Skaros Rock, which lies in front of the village. This giant rock is part of the island and used to have a castle designed for the island’s administration offices. Sadly the massive earthquake of 1956 destroyed the castle, but the dramatic hillside and the view are definitely worth the hike. Try to get to Skaros Rock in the late afternoon and stay until sunset - it’s out-of-this-world beautiful from the rock!
