Holidays in Fira

Poised on the edge of a magnificent cliff, the capital of Santorini enjoys a wonderful setting with panoramic views over the submerged volcano. Located on the west coast of the island of Santorini and boasting the most stunning sunsets, Fira (also known as Thira) is a stylish, small capital. Looking down, the beautiful lagoon is connected to the sea in two places, and because of the 400m caldera, it is easy to anchor boats anywhere in the bay. Most parts of Fira are only accessible on foot, in a cable car or by donkey. The town is relatively modern mixing Venetian and Cycladic architecture with its pretty whitewashed houses with blue windows and doors, and churches with blue domes. Wherever you go, a fabulous view is guaranteed. Simply pack a pair of good walking shoes and a camera!

Some of the best restaurants can be found within the busy streets of Fira. Most of the gourmet restaurants belong to the hotels, and it can be challenging to find a really authentic local taverna among the chic restaurants. Nikolas Taverna, which has made it in the pages of many travel guides, is one of the few local tavernas maintaining its low-key charm and affordable prices.

The cute little streets of Fira are lined with bars, cafes and shops selling souvenirs, jewellery, paintings and pottery. One of the most popular souvenir is a beautiful painting of the white houses with the shimmering bay at the background.
