Holidays in Santorini

The gem of the Aegean Sea, Santorini is breathtakingly beautiful and romantic, and not surprisingly it is honeymooners’ heaven. It is part of the famous Cyclades island group in the Aegean Sea. Cyclades (‘circular islands’) are said to be some of the most beautiful islands in the world and according to the Greek mythology, Poseidon (God of the Sea) was furious at the Cyclades nymphs and turned them into islands. Picture-perfect scenery with white and blue architecture, amazing views over the sea and tastefully designed hotels and villas make Santorini one of the most desirable destinations in the Mediterranean. Santorini is a crescent-shaped island group consisting of five islands of Thira (the main island, also known as Santorini), Thirassia, Aspronissi, Palea and Nea Kameni in the southernmost part of the Cyclades. The island group is an active volcano and was created as a result of intensive volcanic activity thousands of years ago.

Enjoy the amazingly azure sea surrounding Santorini and her fascinating beaches of white, red or black sand and volcanic pebbles. Santorini’s uniqueness is the gorgeous view from the edge of the caldera over the lagoon and the Aegean Sea. The capital of the island, Fira, is beautifully positioned high up on the edge of the caldera looking down on the lagoon guaranteeing the most amazing view. The lagoon is connected to the sea in two places, and because of the 400m caldera, it is easy to anchor ships anywhere in the beautiful bay.

Most of the towns and villages are located high above the cliff creating a fabulous sense of place. Oia is one of the most exclusive tourist areas with one of the best views over the lagoon and it is home to many luxury hotels on the island. A trip to the villages make an interesting day trip with their famous archaeological sites and either modern cosmopolitan or authentic traditional ambience. Most of the villages are surrounded by lush green vineyards which create a picture-postcard scenery together with the whitewashed walls and bright doors and shutters of the buildings.

As everywhere else in Greece as well, the restaurants and tavernas are full of gastronomic delights. Sweet cherry tomatoes, white eggplants, fava, caper and special fresh goat cheese are an important part of the local cuisine. Local wines are exceptional because of the fertile volcanic soil of the island. The setting and ambience in Santorini is a hint more romantic and exclusive than anywhere else in Greece which also makes the island an ideal overseas wedding location.

Santorini has received a lot of recognition in the travel industry. Travel + Leisure Magazine ranked Santorini as the world’s top island in 2011 and BBC named it ‘The World’s Best Island’ in 2011.
