Situated at the feet of Mount Athos, and 120 km from Thessaloniki, Ouranoupolis is a pretty and characteristic village oozing calmness. Ouranoupolis means ‘the city of heaven’ and this little serene place is known as the final stop for the pilgrims who get ready for their spiritual journey to Mount Athos. All visitors are welcomed by Tower of Andronikos which was built in 1344 by one of the monasteries to protect the peninsula from the pirates. The old fishing harbour is located right in front of the tower from where the ferries depart for the monasteries and sightseeing cruises around the peninsula. The fascinating Byzantine tower hosts a great collection of Christian antiquities from the region.
