Holidays in Halkidiki
Unknown and untouched, Halkidiki is gloriously located on a triple-finger shaped peninsula in the northern part of the main island of Greece stretching out into the Aegean Sea. Halkidiki is not one of the most well-known Greek holiday resorts - and this is what makes it hugely appealing. This picturesque area showcases some of the most spectacular, and untouched, scenery in Greece.
With over 300 beautiful beaches and secluded coves surrounded by the azure waters of the Aegean Sea, Halkidiki is an ideal place for a beach holiday. Conveniently located on the main island, Halkidiki is easily accessible from Thessaloniki Airport. No traffic, easy to get to and drive around, Halkidiki is one of Greece’s hidden gems. It is Aristotle’s birthplace - with a handful of fascinating sites that are a must during your visit. Explore Aristotle’s statue in Stagira, the old village of Nikiti (they produce the well-known honey), admire the view of the pine forests of Mount Itamos, take a stroll along pretty sandy Tristinika Beach or visit the ruins of old Lerissos.
Halkidiki is split between three individual peninsulas. In the west, the Kassandra Peninsula is best known for its beaches and tourist resorts with lush, green hills on the backdrop. Most of Halkidiki’s hotels are located on this peninsula offering laid-back atmosphere for families and more livelier towns with a choice of nightlife and restaurants. Sithonia’s peninsula is positioned in the middle. It is famed for its wild and rugged scenery with secluded coves, tiny fishing villages and emerald pine forests. In the east, the mystified Mount Athos is home to many Halkidiki’s monasteries which are not open for visitors. The best way to explore this easternmost part of Halkidiki is by boat along its shores.
In addition to its beautiful mountains, secluded coves and pristine beaches, Halkidiki offers a world-class culinary delights in one of many restaurants and luxury hotels. A wonderful array of water sport is available including scuba diving, windsurfing, kitesurfing and water skiing to name perhaps the most thrilling options. The beautiful nature and mountains surrounding Halkidiki also ensure a fantastic setting for mountain biking and hiking among pine, oak, chestnut and fir trees. Naturally the less visited Sithonia and Mount Athos offer more secluded and quieter experience with their pebbly coves and nearly private beaches with more limited facilities, whilst the Kalithea beach is perhaps the most beautiful with powdery, tropical sands and shimmering waters.
Once you have discovered the beauty of Halkidiki, explore some of the nearby spots. Ammouliani Island is a short ferry ride from the main island and boasts amazing beaches; Diaporo Island is the getaway of Thessaloniki’s rich and famous with beautiful, tropical-looking beaches or visit any of the secluded bays between Porto Carras and Porto Koufo. The options are endless - as long as you manage to tear yourself away Halkidiki’s beautiful setting!
