East meets west, or Christianity meets Islam, with both religious represented with the St. Lazarus Church and Hala Sultan Mosque, Larnaca offers a wonderfully cultural insight into Cypriot history and a range of very interesting sites. Larnaca, located on the southern coast of Cyprus, is the island’s third largest and the oldest town boasting an exciting array of ancient sites including a UNESCO World Heritage site of Choirokoitia, which is one of the best preserved sites of a prehistorical settlement brought to light in the Mediterranean. A visit to the Church of Angeloktisti (in the village of Kiti) features one of the finest examples of Byzantine art of the Justinian period or the Monastery of Stavrovouni, which dramatically sits on a rocky peak with a panoramic view over the surrounding hillsides. Larnaca Port, which was built in 1625, used to be a prison but is now home to a small archaeological museum. Perhaps the most well-known landmark of Larnaca is the magnificent 9th century white-stone Ayios Lazaros Church, located between the former Turkish and bazaar quarters, and is a wonderful example of Byzantine architecture.

Enjoy evening strolls along the picturesque seafront lined with tall palm trees, or find a delightful taverna to sample Cypriot meze (a tapas-style small servings of typical food including salads, fish, meat and vegetables). Some tavernas provide local entertainment including folk dancing and music - creating an evening of authenticity and one to remember.

Larnaca has an excellent mix of great beaches and the area is a fantastic base on the southern coast to explore the other resorts and parts of Cyprus. The mountainous area is dotted with charming villages where you can experience a real authentic way of living.
