Holidays to Georgioupolis
Once a sleepy fishing village, Georgioupolis is a pretty little town, well-catered for tourists, but managed to retain its old charm and traditions. Located in the rural western Crete between the busy cities of Chania and Rethymnon, Georgioupolis is a lovely beach resort enjoying endless Greek sunshine and a soft golden beach stretching for several kilometres.
The charming harbour is the hub of the village with its pretty-coloured wooden fishing boats and whitewashed St. Nicolas Chapel. A popular pastime is to head down to the harbour for a morning coffee to welcome the fishing boats back with the day’s catch. This is where the quiet River Almyros meets the shimmering Aegean Sea.
Enjoy lazy days by one of the longest sandy beaches in Crete where you can still find a secluded spot not spoilt by mass tourism. In the shade of the tall eucalyptus trees, the village square is lined with trendy cafes, bars and traditional tavernas, which liven up in the evenings. If you can tear yourself away from this idyllic setting, about 2 km from Georgioupolis is Lake Kournas, Crete’s only freshwater lake, which is perfect for a refreshing swim followed by lunch in a lakeside taverna whilst enjoying the glorious mountain scenery.
