Holidays in Agia Pelagia

Surrounded by hills and mountains, Agia Pelagia is conveniently located in the middle of Crete, 23 km northwest from the capital, Heraklion. Agia Pelagia is a delightful fishing village built in a stunning amphitheatric bay featuring nine small sandy and rocky beaches which can be easily accessed by foot. The location is ideal for day trips around the island: Visit the beautiful Minoan Palace of Knossos, fascinating archeological Museum of Heraklion and some of the Crete’s traditional villages poised in the picturesque hilly countryside. The village of Agia Pelagia and its surroundings offer an interesting insight into local history and traditions. The resort is named after the homonymous church of the Monastery of the Sebbathians which ruins are located about 1 km from the village. Other interesting archeological places to visit are the post-minoan graves and the University of Pritanion (from the 4th century B.C.).

The delightful village has a range of traditional tavernas, cafes and bars and some shops. The restaurants and tavernas are spoilt with fresh, local produce as the main income still comes from agriculture. Fresh, locally grown herbs and cabbage, onions and other vegetables are important ingredients in local dishes. A beautiful bay and tranquil picturesque beaches create a wonderful setting that has captured the hearts of many visitors over the years.
